About the Unit
Unit Job Summary

The Career Services Coordinator, an entry-level career development position, will assist our Director of Career Services with strategic planning, programming, and career placement for the MA Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS), the Committee on International Relations (CIR), and the MA in Computational Social Science. Those programs, the three largest in the Division of the Social Sciences, have a combined 350 current students. The Office of Career Services draws on the best contemporary practices to address the employment needs and hiring protocols of small businesses, large corporations, government, and nonprofit organizations.

Special Event Planning & Coordination

  • Coordinate Career Services events for the three programs (e.g. MAPSS, CIR, and Computation Career Conferences).

  • Handle event logistics including securing speakers, ordering and setting up catering, arranging for technical support, adhering to budgets, working with university schedulers, tracking participation, and coordinating outcome assessment.

Communications & Administrative Support

  • Compile and distribute three program-focused weekly digests, outlining employment and internship opportunities, workshops, invited lectures, and other relevant academic and career events.

  • Collect alumni and employer data, for incorporation into University databases.

  • Provide administrative and program support including office coverage, research and data entry, and assistance with special projects.

  • Represent the programs at special events (may include an occasional evening or weekend).

  • Participate as a team member in program goals and activities. Collect evaluations, solicit recommendations, and assist with the improvement of program events.


  • Work with graduate students and alumni to create career development plans including components of career exploration, career and internship goals, job-search, resume preparation, and interviewing.

  • Integrate specific examples and templates to illustrate/suggest next steps and provide clients with reasonable action plans.

  • Refer advisees to workshops, mentors, alumni, and/or resources as appropriate.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and information about social science career fields.


  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate workshops (specifically the Career Mentor-in-Residence series).

  • Assist the Director of Career Services with bi-weekly Workshops (with seminars focused on career and industry exploration, informational interviewing, career document preparation, job search strategies, interviewing, LinkedIn, etc.).

  • Develop visual aids, handouts, flyers, and presentation material.

  • Track participation and student assessments.

Employer Development and Recruitment

  • Serve as a resource and liaison to employers interested in hiring and mentoring our students.

  • Increase our program visibility in the employment community.

  • Communicate with employers via telephone, letter, on-site visits, and on-campus events to encourage their submission of job and internship opportunities, and their participation in career programming.


Bachelor's degree in the social sciences or related field required. Master's degree preferred.


0-4 years experience in career services OR the ability and desire to enter the field with opportunities for future growth required. Experience advising diverse groups of graduate students and alumni; ability to work with faculty, staff, and organizations. Strong oral and written communication skills with great attention to detail. Technical knowledge sufficient to learn Excel, PowerPoint, Mailchimp, SurveyMonkey, CMS, etc. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and implement program events.


Expertise in counseling, program development, or a related area required. Demonstrated success in building collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies required. Excellent verbal and written communications skills required. Ability to communicate to large groups as well as one-on-one with students, senior management, faculty, alumni, etc. required. Willingness and ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends required.
