The Pozen Family Center for Human Rights at the University of Chicago was founded in 1998. The Pozen Center supports innovative interdisciplinary teaching and research initiatives that critically explore the theory and practice of global human rights.

Unit Job Summary

The Administrator provides leadership and oversees advanced, diverse, and confidential duties for all Pozen Center operations. The primary areas of responsibility include: (1) academic programs and student affairs; (2) financial management; and (3) Center operations. This position may assist with Pozen Center events, including occasional evening and weekend hours. Supervision of student staff may be required. Specific duties are outlined below.

Academic Programs and Student Affairs (40%):

(1) Leads the Pozen Center's course administration. This includes anticipating and resolving issues by collaborating with the Faculty and Executive Directors (directors), Office of the Registrar, academic departments, and divisions as needed (i.e. course distribution throughout the year, cross-listing questions, course size limits); communicating with faculty instructors about curriculum questions and teaching logistics; overseeing Pozen Center annual schedule of courses with the College catalog and new Academic Information System.

(2) Collaborates with directors and divisional administrators to advertise, hire, and appoint teaching assistants for human rights courses.

(3) Oversees College students minoring in Human Rights by working closely with directors and Preceptor to maintain records, promote human rights events, and build stronger connections between students.

(4) Develops internal tracking procedures for course information, maintains records, and updates Web content. Compiles information and creates custom reports on academic information for various Pozen Center annual reports.

Develops, designs, and delivers orientation to visiting professors, postdoctoral instructors, and student staff on University academic systems and Center operations. ? May work closely with directors to plan and oversee annual student award competitions, including coordinating the decision processes with faculty selection committees.

Financial Management (30%)

(1) Manages all financial disbursements, student and visitor payments, GEMS reconciliation, and procurement under very limited supervision. Makes recommendations and for improving Center procedures for payments.

(2) Resolves routine and complex payment questions through problem solving and research in order to independently create solutions. Stays informed of activities relating to University financial systems and payment procedures.

(3) Researches and stays informed of procedures for payments to international students and visitors.

(4) Maintains financial and payment records to track spending against budget allocations. Makes recommendations for budget allocations for operational expenses.

Operations Management (30%):

(1) Manages the daily operations of a small organizational unit in a university setting. Develops and implements office procedures and policies, in consultation with directors.

(2) Evaluates and approves requests to use Pozen Center space. Creates and delivers training about building procedures for student groups that use Pozen Center space after hours.

(3) Manages space, facilities, supplies, and equipment. Researches and develops relationships with new vendors, including creating new contracts, when new or better services or supplies are needed.

(4) Coordinates complex travel arrangements and accommodations for Pozen Center visitors, including developing new agreements with vendors.


Bachelor's degree required.

  • Familiarity with general business practices. Minimum of three years of office or financial management. Previous university administration experience preferred.

  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Prioritize and execute multiple tasks simultaneously. Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with tact and discretion.

  • Excellent computer skills, including (1) proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based applications and (2) ability to quickly learn course administration and financial systems.

Physical Demands

  • Mostly sedentary work with considerable use of personal computers.

  • Ability to lift up to 15 lbs associated with managing supplies, event set-up or audio/visual equipment; ability to walk to areas and program venues around campus and the city of Chicago.
