The Business

Willis Towers Watson benefit consultants have deep experience working with organizations of all types and sizes. We have worked closely with clients to develop some of the most advanced benefit design techniques currently in use.

The Health and Benefits Compliance practice within WTW’s Health and Group Benefits (HGB) line of business provides support to clients in the areas of ACA compliance, including reviews/audits, other health and welfare (e.g., disability, other leave) compliance and operational reviews, support in the areas of governance, state, federal and jurisdictional changes that impact plan design and/or administration, mergers and acquisitions, plan documents, non-discrimination testing and other related activities. As such, we help clients fulfil their compliance obligations and achieve plan effectiveness.

The Role

In this role you will be responsible for managing the completion and delivery of client engagements, serving as a strategic advisor to clients concerning their compliance issues and assisting with the development of new business.

You will be working both directly with clients and in coordination with our broader H&B practice, as well as our Technical Services Group and Retirement practices. This would be under the supervision of a senior compliance attorney within the practice. You will also be asked to participate in the overall development of the practice.

Performance Objectives:

Financial

  • Meet chargeable and/or other related compliance hours targets

  • Contribute to sales and marketing efforts by supporting compliance team

  • Identify opportunities to cross-sell new products and services

  • Build relationships with internal and external sources to maximize the penetration of key target accounts

Clients

  • Partner with colleagues to support multiple client projects involving health and welfare benefit plan design and strategy and federal, state and local compliance issues

  • Develop client deliverables in coordination with consultants and senior consultants

  • Play a supportive role in ensuring projects meet established budget, timeline and quality standards

  • Research various compliance and tax issues, draft responses and memoranda and assist client meetings and presentations

  • Participate on compliance audits and benefits administration/process improvement reviews

  • Assist with the preparation of presentations and reports on changing laws and the impact on employers and their benefit plans

  • Demonstrate natural ease and effectiveness when dealing with clients/colleagues at all levels

  • Partner with colleagues to manage multiple client projects involving health and welfare benefit plan design and strategy and federal, state and local compliance issues

  • Finalize and present quality deliverables to clients

  • Ensure projects meet established budget, timeline and quality standards

  • Assist with the preparation of presentations and reports on changing laws and the impact on employers and their benefit plans

  • Demonstrate natural ease and effectiveness when dealing with clients/colleagues at all levels

Excellence

  • Serve as health and welfare compliance subject matter expert on client assignments

  • Perform technical review of deliverables

  • Contribute to the development of new tools and approaches related to compliance consulting

People

  • Demonstrate leadership ability by mentoring analysts

  • Build relationships internally and collaborate effectively on cross-functional teams

  • Oversee analysts in the delivery of compliance projects

The Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate required and minimum of 6 years relevant experience within employee benefits

  • Proven experience and success in employee health and welfare benefit consulting with a focus on compliance. Prior experience in a professional services firm, insurance company or legal environment preferred

  • Knowledge of IRC, ERISA and other relevant laws and regulations affecting employee benefit plans

  • Material client-facing experience with public speaking experience a plus

  • Experience in managing multiple individuals and project work streams and producing quality deliverables on time and within budget

  • Proven ability to recognize and diagnose issues, work in teams, and leverage the resources of other related practices to address client challenges
