Under general direction, formulates and defines the scope and objectives for new or existing applications or programs requiring custom development. Typically carries out assignments with minimal direction from a project manager or programming development manager. Works with stakeholders to gather requirements for developmental programs. Reviews and analyzes business and technical requirements. Designs applications to meet business and technical requirements. Translates specifications into business cases, models, and ultimately into designs and actual programming code. Devises or modifies procedures to solve complex problems and works at a high technical level in all phases of application development and programming activities. Works as part of a team with varying responsibilities for completion of an entire project or a phase of a project. Participates in component design, programming, code reviews, and unit testing. Designs and develops technology and models for development projects as assigned. Performs code testing on components and works to ensure appropriate implementation standards are met. Evaluates design alternatives for development cost and solutions using various methods. Typically works with business analysts, project managers, and end-users to ensure that delivery expectations are met. Provides support and maintenance for existing applications and participates in production support during business hours and pre-launch hours. Resolves customer complaints and responds to suggestions for improvements and enhancements from end-users. Demonstrates programs. Provides appropriate written documentation of project development and programming code.

Unit Job Summary
Senior Software Developer: Performs all functions relating to the development and maintenance of the software and databases for the Journals Subscription Fulfillment Department of the Press. Devises and modifies procedures to solve complex problems and works at a high technical level in all phases of application development and programming activities. Understands the functions of the business units supported by the software. Works with Manager of Subscription Technology and stakeholders to develop and modify features, reports, and applications to effectively utilize the information available in the fulfillment database to increase subscription revenue and subscriber retention.
Maintains and supports existing applications developed in VB .NET/ SQL Server. Develops new applications and makes significant changes and enhancements to existing software. Makes modifications to existing database structure. Designs, codes, tests, debugs and ensures that appropriate implementation standards are met.
Works with Subscription Technology colleagues to maintain quality control and integrity of the Subscription Fulfillment Database. Responsibilities in this area include developing andgenerating reports and queries designed to identify and correct subscription errors, errors in journal information, and customer account errors and then identify solutions to these issues either by suggesting improvements to the system software and/or correcting errors in system software.
Works with Subscription Technology colleagues as well as directly with users of various business units to resolve business problems. This may involve being an information resource, extracting information from the database to answer specific questions or address a specific issue, or gathering technical and database specifications to implement enhancements into the existing application infrastructure.
Maintains procedures manuals, preparing revisions as needed and submits the revisions for approval as appropriate. Communicates all revisions to appropriate staff and maintains the archival copy. Creates documentation of system functionality, new project development and programming code. Performs other duties as requested by the Manager of Subscription Technology.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or another relevant computer related field required.
Certifications in .NET strongly preferred Advanced degree in mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field preferred. Dual degree or concentration in system design preferred. Microsoft developer certifications preferred.
Minimum three years of software development experience covering all phases of Software Development Life Cycle including extensive testing experience required. Minimum three years of experience in Web-based environments required. Experience in relational database design and programming required. Proficiency in each of the following technologies preferred: Visual Basic.NET and SQL Server. Experience in each of the following technologies preferred: ASP.NET, XML, IIS, web services, and .NET windows services. Experience in client/server environments preferred. Experience in Software Configuration Management preferred.
Knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of software development required. Ability to handle multiple and concurrent roles within the same project required. Ability to produce required results in a timely manner required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including ability to communicate clearly and directly with less technical personnel required. Ability to use standard software development applications and tools required. Ability to use analytical and quantitative skills and diagnostic techniques to resolve problems required. Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical staff required. Ability to work in a collaborative team environment required. Confidentiality related to sensitive University matters such as, strategic initiatives, trade secrets, quiet periods, and scientific discoveries yet to be put in the public domain required.
