Senior Engineer – Hydroprocessing Catalyst Pilot Plant Testing
The Senior Engineer -- Hydroprocessing Catalyst Pilot Plant Testing utilizes his or her expertise in heterogeneous catalysis to support refinery profitability by planning and leading targeted experimental programs. A member of the Hydroprocessing and Reforming Technology and Engineering Team, the role is responsible for guiding catalyst selection for BP refineries world-wide.
This role reports to the Hydroprocessing, Reforming, and Isomerization Discipline Leader, and is a key contributor to the Hydroprocessing Continuous Improvement Forum agenda and performance.

Conduct laboratory experiments to support hydrotreating and related technologies. Devise protocols for third-party testing.
Direct the work of operators/technicians and interface with chemical analysts to meet the goals of defined experimental programs.
Gather and interpret pilot plant data to draw meaningful conclusions for refinery customers, applying process and kinetic models as appropriate.
Ensure that pilot plant operations meet specified internal and external regulations and standards. Maintain safe operation of laboratory equipment by enforcing safe and consistent work practices. Participate in audits and demonstrate safety leadership.
Specify and commission new lab equipment, and coordinate modifications as necessary for execution of testing programs. Troubleshoot pilot plants and equipment.
Interface with refinery customers and with internal and external technology experts. Support the implementation of new catalysts and technology options at the refineries.
Contribute to BP’s knowledge base by leading discussions, contributing to the Q&A forum, and preparing high-quality technical documentation.
Essential education includes a PhD in Chemical Engineering, with research in heterogeneous catalysis, kinetics, and/or reaction/process engineering.
The successful candidate will have a firm understanding of process engineering fundamentals, and be able to apply the principles of mass and energy transfer and thermodynamics.
Desirable criteria and qualifications:
Experience applying catalysis knowledge to refinery operations is desirable, but not critical. Such experience includes:
An understanding of how catalyst selection influences refinery unit performance.
Experience using semi-empirical or kinetically-based technology models for supporting commercial decisions.
In addition, the following qualifications are also desirable:
Experience managing pilot plant or catalyst development programs using a stage-gate process.
A working knowledge of acid-metal bi-functional catalysis for hydrocarbon conversions.
Familiarity with Continuous Improvement techniques or Root Cause Analysis.
