Burns & McDonnell Structural Engineering Intern in Chicago, Illinois


Our Structural Engineering Interns are responsible for performing tasks requiring the application of standard civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures. This includes standard design of civil/structural project work, assisting lead engineers with various project duties, and other duties as assigned.

Opportunities for our Structural Engineering Interns exist in multiple market segments and locations. Specific assignments and project work varies depending on the market segments and locations. Locations available are Kansas City, Chicago, Denver, Houston, New England (Wallingford, CT) and Roanoke (VA). Please see below for information on each market:

Aviation & Federal:

Projects include structural design of airport terminals and control towers to long span hangars and maintenance facilities. Design on Architecturally driven projects such as intelligent buildings, Command centers and Essential Facilities for the US Government.


Project work includes analysis and design of structures for new power-generating facilities, as well as upgrades to existing facilities. Structures include foundation systems and steel structures for boiler and powerhouse buildings, turbines, pumps, and fans, air pollution control equipment, cooling towers, and water treatment facilities, as well as pipe racks, mechanical and electrical equipment platform structures.

Global Facilities:

Design projects such as jet fighter aircraft testing and production facilities, jet engine test facilities, oil & gas transportation facilities, central utility plants, and manufacturing facilities. Design on Architecturally driven projects such as commercial buildings and university facilities.

Oil, Gas, & Chemicals

Perform analysis and design of structures for new oil refinery and petrochemical facilities; chemical, biofuel and industrial facilities. Structures include foundation systems and steel structures for: distillation towers, heaters, compressors, pumps, and fans, and building structures; unloading and storage facilities; cooling towers; and underground structures, pipe racks, mechanical and electrical equipment platform structures.

Transmission & Distribution:

Design work of electrical substations, both overhead and underground high-voltage transmission lines. Areas of design include site development, foundation and steel design, linear facility design, electrical & mechanical material design, and wood/steel/concrete structure design, all for a variety of clients across the country.


Design work includes complex interchange and long span bridge design. Projects also include culvert, retaining wall and other roadway-related structures


  • Pursuit of Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering from an accredited program with at least one year of post-secondary education.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience is a plus.

  • Involvement on campus or in the community.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e. without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
