Eaton’s Electrical Engineering Services & Systems division has an opening for a Substation Field Engineer. The Substation Field Engineer can be based anywhere in the continental U.S. as the position could require up to 75%-100% dependent on location.

We are currently looking for a Substation Field Engineer for protection and control. This position reports to the Regional Manager, Field Services and this individual functions as the responsible electrical commissioning engineer for assigned projects. This position will provide overall project planning, coordination and supervision of construction, commissioning and testing activities to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. The person should be well experienced in wiring check outs, panel testing, CT testing, relay programming and testing, troubleshooting, etc. Approximately 75% travel will be required for commissioning and testing while 25% will be utilized at the local office for project meetings and assisting with project design.
Essential Responsibilities :
The primary responsibility is the safe, efficient and accurate commissioning of new transmission substation equipment prior to it being released for transmission operations.
Development of check-out guides, review and approval of test results and isolation plans, and the development of energization plans to minimize system risk.
Communication across multi-disciplined teams to include electrical contractors, customers, regional technicians, transmission operators, design engineers, planning/protection and project management to ensure successful and timely project completion.
Challenge project designs for correctness and reliability standards.
Applying engineering skills and operational knowledge in the identification and resolution of technical problems while in the field.
Providing limited field design services to correct minor design problems encountered during the implementation of substation capital projects.
Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers by providing knowledge of potential hazards, industry regulations/requirements and company practices.
Producing results that have a direct, positive impact on the company.
Act as resident engineer on projects of any magnitude.
Interpret complex plans and specifications and apply available information to ensure that all project design requirements are satisfied.
Takes a lead role in resolving construction problems, procedures, and methods through working with the customer and engineering personnel, inspectors, contractors, and suppliers.
Plan, perform and document the commissioning of various control and power circuits to ensure the intended operation and safety of equipment and personnel are met.
Maintain familiarity with appropriate engineering and construction codes to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
Prepare and/or monitor complex construction and commissioning schedules to ensure the timely completion of work.
Prepare and/or implement outage plans, energization plans, and detailed commissioning plans.
Institute, direct and document changes to work when required by differing site conditions.
Conduct on-site design or investigation work to ensure adequacy of contractor’s methods. Evaluate contractor’s procedures, starting and completion times, and staffing requirements for each phase of construction.
May assist in the professional development, training, and evaluation of department personnel.
Basic Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution OR a Professional Certified Engineer (PE) license with a Bachelor’s degree in (science field OR engineering) from an accredited institution
Minimum 3 years of substation and/or relay testing experience
Minimum 3-5 years of engineering experience
Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
The position is open geography. Candidates must reside in the continental U.S. to be considered.
Preferred Qualifications :
7+ years of experience evaluating and servicing electrical distribution or control systems is desirable.
Protection and control experience with transmission and distribution equipment
5+ years working with High voltage substations
Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
Experience in the design, maintenance or testing of substation equipment.
Experience with application and communication of microprocessor based protection and control equipment
Experience with SEL products and software, Enoserve RTS and Doble testing
Position Criteria :
Must be able to meet and maintain customer entrance and qualification requirements
Must be willing to travel 75 – 100% of the time
Superior written and verbal communication skills
Valid and unrestricted driver’s license issued by state of residence and in good standing is required.
