Position Overview Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a candidate to fill a Transportation Drainage Engineer position in the Lisle, Illinois (Chicago Region) preferred or Peoria, Illinois (alternate) office.

Position Profile This person is expected to lead drainage tasks on complex roadway projects, provide drainage quality control and design review, and mentor junior staff. Candidate may also perform roadway design tasks as required. It is important that this position can support project teams from initial planning through design to construction. Projects will generally involve roadway and highway design projects for local governments, state departments of transportation, toll authorities, and private clients.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities: 1. Prepare Phase 1 storm water management studies, including Location Drainage Studies, Hydraulic Reports, and conceptual drainage studies related to roadway improvements 2. Responsible for design of permanent and temporary drainage (open and closed systems) on roadway projects 3. Hydrologic and hydraulic analysis 4. Storm water detention/retention design 5. Erosion/sediment control and landscaping design 6. Coordination of design with other disciplines on larger multi-disciplinary projects 7. Utility coordination and permit development 8. Quantity calculations, cost estimates, and special provision development 9. Preparing and assembling plans and contract documents 10. Managing technical tasks and design teams (including responsibilities for technical teams, budget, and schedule). This may include quality control reviews 11. Estimating efforts for technical tasks 12. Technical writing 13. Construction observation 14. Familiarity with green infrastructure research and design preferred, but not required 15. Roadway design such as geometrics, roadside safety, sign and marking layout, and maintenance of traffic 16. Other duties as assigned


Technical Skills:

  • Experience with StormCAD, HydroCAD, HEC-RAS and TR-55 is strongly desired

  • Experience with Microstation and PowerGeopak (OpenRoads SS4) software

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and Civil 3D desirable

Soft Skills:

  • Provide staff training recommendations

  • Mentoring and managing junior technical staff

  • Collaborating with senior technical staff

  • Must demonstrate the ability to present complex technical concepts to engineers, clients, and public stakeholders

  • Must be able to build effective relationships with internal and external client bases

  • Strong oral communication and technical writing skills

  • Ability to assist on project pursuits


  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or closely related field

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive drainage and roadway engineering experience with transportation projects

  • Professional Engineer license (IL) or be able to reciprocate a license from another state within 6 months

  • Familiarity with Illinois Tollway and IDOT drainage design standards

  • Candidate must be willing to accept out-of-town travel assignments

  • Must be willing to work overtime to meet project demands when needed
